Beat the worst is a fun golf side game you can player with 2,3, or 4 players. The game works like this.
On each hole one golfer will be designated “on the spot”. If you are “on the spot” that means it is your turn to earn points. You will earn a point if you are able to beat the worst golfer on your given hole.
In other words when you are “on the spot” you must score better than atleast one golfer in your group in order to receive a point.
This game is played in a stroke-play format. Meaning the golfer with the lower amount of strokes has the better score.
The golfer who is “on the spot” changes each hole. You will rotate who is on the spot in the same order so that each golfer has the same number of holes in which he or she is on the spot.
In order to make this number even you will have to eliminate two holes if you are playing in a foursome. This is because you the highest number of holes you can divide evenly amongst four golfers is 16.
The golfer with the most points at the end of the round is the winner.

Yes, unless the group of golfers you are playing with are incredibly close in skill it is always the best practice to use your handicap. The main reason for this is because the nature of this game. As you already know in order to gain any points you need to beat the worst golfer in the group when you are on the spot.
If you are the least skilled golfer and you do not get any handicap strokes then this is going to a difficult task. Playing this golf side game without a handicap will likely end up with the least skilled golfer in the group ending the game with a zero on the scoreboard.
Strategy And Tactics
This is a fairly straight forward golf game which means there isn’t a ton of strategy that goes into it. But that being said there are still a few strategies you may want to use on the course. These can slightly improve your chance of winning.
Make Sure You’re Focusing On Beating The Worst
Believe it or not once you are put “on the spot” in this game nerves are going to come into play. When playing this game you may be prone to make mistakes when you are on the spot.
For this reason, we believe it can be important to play conservatively when playing on the spot. Often times one of three golfers you are playing with will have a poor score on the hole.
The last thing you want to do is put a ball out of bounds. And lose the hole despite another golfer having a bogey or worse. For this reason, we believe it can be helpful to put away the driver. Hit layup shots, and aim for the center of the green when playing on the spot.
This is, of course, dependent on the skill level of your group. If playing in a group of high handicappers this will be especially helpful.

Paying attention to handicap strokes given out are another important factor of this game. The last thing you want is thinking you beat the worst and it turns out he had an extra handicap stroke.
