The Three Most Popular Golf Grips

Getting a proper hold of the golf club is one of the most important aspects of the game. So we understand if you’re looking to try out a few different methods to find the one best suited for you. Throughout this article, we are going to breakdown the three most popular golf grips so you can find the perfect one for your game.

Overlapping Grip AKA Vardon Overlap Grip

The overlapping grip is our first edition on our list of the most popular golf grips. As you can see from the image above this grip via an overlap of both your hands on the golf grip.

The overlapping grip is unique for this reason as other popular grip styles either interlock the hands or detach them completely. This is an incredibly popular grip and typically the grip taught to those taking lessons from golf pros.

To do this grip you simply wrap your fingers around the club shaft. You then want to overlap your hands. You can do this by placing your lower hands pinky on top of your top hand right in between the index finger and middle finger.

The overlap golf grip was invented by Harry Vardon near the end of the 20th century. This grip has gone on to become incredibly popular, used by world-famous golfers such as Rory Mcilroy.

Baseball Grip AKA Ten Finger Grip

The “baseball grip” also referred to as the ten-finger grip is a style that is especially popular amongst beginner golfers. This grip is quite easy to pick up as to achieve it you must simply grip the club the same way you would grip a baseball bat.

This is done by wrapping your top hand near the top of the shaft. This top hand will be your left if you are righty. Otherwise, it will be your right hand if you are a lefty.

Once your top hand is on the club you want to place your second hand lower down the shaft. To do this wrap your pinky around the club right where your top hand ends.

If you have done this correctly the bottom of the hand lower down the shaft should be resting on the top of your hand that is higher up the shaft.

Though remember we are talking about golf and not baseball. The “top hand” is the hand that is higher up the grip when you are addressing a golf ball.

This style of grip is the least effective of the three we are going to include on our list. Though some golfers have managed to take this grip to an extremely high level.

Beth Daniel an LPGA hall of famer used this grip as well as, Art Wall Jr who was a Masters Tournament winner.

Interlocking Grip

The interlocking grip is likely the most common grip used by golfers today. This grip is used by many of the pros on tour including some of the greats like Tiger Woods and Rory Mcilroy.

This grip as you have likely imagined relies on the two hands interlocking together. This is done through the pinky finger of the lower hand and the index finger of the top hand. The interlocking of these two fingers ensures that your hands stay locked into position. This makes this grip helpful for golfers with weaker wrists and hands.

Though, with this grip, you will find that there is some room for error. As the shaft of the club may find some wiggle room in your palms.
